QYLC Plans in the Works
This year’s theme is “Letting our Lives Speak.” Students will engage in activities designed to build community, expand their minds, share resources and cultivate leadership skills. For a detailed schedule, click here Conference Schedule.
FRIDAY
On Friday morning participants will get a chance to “let their lives speak,” through service placements in the region surrounding George School. There will service placements at local soup kitchens, Quaker Meetings, education centers and other community outreach programs.
On Friday afternoon there will be an opportunity for recreation, relaxation, and fun. (!) QYLC participants will get to go ice skating or bowling, with time for “chillaxing” (chill + relax = “chillax”) J. At the end of the afternoon there will be a gathering of “affinity groups,” discussion groups of student-led and student-centered organizations and activities from George School and other Friends schools. (For example, the Ecological Club, the GLBTQ club, the Student Live Music Club, the Literary Zine, the Amnesty International club, the Pacific Rim Organization, etc.)
Friday evening will be a time for celebration and entertainment. We are thrilled that our lead entertainment for Friday evening will be Jon Watts, the Quaker singer-songwriter-performer http://www.jonwatts.com/category/testimonials/ . If you have not seen “Dance Party Breaks Out at Quaker Meeting for Worship,” please click here and enjoy! Jon’s headline performance will be opened with performances from George School student musicians.
SATURDAY
On Saturday morning, the conference will conclude with workshops centered around the “letting our lives speak” theme. These workshops will give students the opportunity to meet with people who have led, organized and initiated an array of projects and experiences that involve putting faith into action. The goal of the workshops is to let students engage with real-life examples of adults who have taken risks to follow their own spiritual leadings, and in doing so have carved out new paths toward living fulfilling and meaningful lives.
The 2010 Quaker Youth Leadership Conference will begin and end with Meetings for Worship in the George School Meetinghouse, a beautiful building from early 19th century Philadelphia that was physically dis-assembled, transported 30 miles, and re-assembled on the George School campus in 1974.
